As American as Apple Pie
At the turn of the 18th century, craftsmen began attaching rockers to ordinary chairs; a hundred years later, authentic rocking chairs were found from down-home country porches to the White House. The modern version of the rocking chair is the glider, designed for smooth, rhythmic motion - a favorite in every room, especially nurseries.

Rocker or Glider?
Rockers have the tendency to inch along on hardwood floors; gliders stay in one place, due to their flat base. A rocking chair takes a bit more effort to maintain an even, rhythmic movement; gliders require only a gentle push for a longer, smoother series of movements, and some have a swivel base. There is no right or wrong choice, just a matter of personal comfort.
Fabulous Features
You'll find wood, wicker, and upholstered rockers. Wooden and wicker rockers require cushions to ensure comfort, and some wicker rockers have aluminum frames for added durability. Contoured arms help to comfortably support baby's head and neck; contoured backs and wide headrests cradle mom's body as well. Upholstered rockers/gliders have thick padded arms, seats, and backs, and some have comfortable oversized seats. Some new mothers prefer the temporary use of an adjustable nursing stool that is more conducive to nursing positions.
Investing in Comfort
After the rocker/glider serves its purpose in the nursery, it can be moved to almost any room of the house. Select a design, finish, workmanship, and upholstery that will meet your long-term needs. Gliders come in cozy wingback, classic, heritage, and sleigh styles. Ottomans might be included with the chair or might be optional; selecting an ottoman turns your rocker/glider into the perfect chair for watching TV or curling up with a good book.
